TaxTron aims to be the big new player on the Canadian tax scene. A few years ago, GriffTax, a company with several years experience in online tax filing, merged with TaxTron. The result is a serious challenge to the big names. TaxTron is 100% Canadian owned & operated and is committed to being Canada's choice for personal income tax software. We rate out of 10, with 10 being the highest.

TaxTron offers an online run through. We're going to give it a good grade based on our own preview of this. TaxTron online tax preparation is designed with the latest technology. And they're nice enough to offer this attractive preview. Since the company is new we'll caution that they may run into problems if they have volume.

Ease of Setup: n/a
TaxTron is available as an internet download. It's available for PC and Mac (unlike a few other tax preparation companies). Also, it's available in English, French and Chinese.

The interface features easy to use tabs. TaxTron strives to be so easy that you can fill out your entire form in ten minutes or less. It has less features than QuickTax and TaxWiz, but it's faster to fill out.

Help: 5
Help seems to be lacking for this product. The interface is relatively easy to use, as you will be able to see for yourself from their online preview. Should you need help, they offer support in English, French, Chinese, Hindi and Punjabi. You can contact them by phoning a Toronto area number (no 1-800 number seems to be available). You can also go into any Softron office. The lack of even a 1-800 number indicates a definite weakness in this area.

Unfortunately, we haven't had a chance to test this. If you have a simple form this might be the online preparation package for you, though.

Price:
It's free if you have an income under $30,000. You can purchase a one-time user license for $12.99 (as of 2007). Other TaxTron options and packages are more expensive, of course.

TaxTron has some very inexpensive options and it promises to be fast. Stay tuned to forums and other online news sources for reviews from actual users of this product. For those who complain about the overly helpful (time consuming) interfaces put together by other tax filing preparation companies, TaxTron might be a quick and relatively painless way to fill in a simple Canadian tax return.
